Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • 5-10 hours per week

  • Assist ABLE participants with basic math, reading, writing, and science

  • Weekly meetings at the HRDC to discuss lesson plans and student progress

  • Collaboration with the current VISTA on the HiSET program building project

  • Provide orientation to the program for all new clients

  • Assist individuals in making realistic assessments of their ability and help establish students’ educational and occupational goals

  • Ensure that the classroom space, materials, supplies, and equipment are ordered, maintained, and updated as necessary

  • Some distribution of promotional materials and recruitment for the ABLE classroom

  • Optional, but encouraged, participation in ABLE classroom workshops

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, word processing, and email communication skills

  • Reliable transportation to the HRDC/study site

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle liability insurance

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled at MSU-Northern

  • Pursuing a career education or community leadership

  • Previous tutoring experience

  • Previous volunteer experience or campus involvement
